UPCOMING TRIP TO BAPS SHRI SWAMINARAYAN MANDIR, LONDON

Year 3 will visit the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, in Neasden, on Tuesday 21st January 2025, as part of their Religious Education unit on Hinduism. The children will consolidate their learning on Hinduism and explore the big question 'What does it mean to be a Hindu in Britain today?'. Activities will include: a short presentation on Hinduism, 'History of the Mandir' video, tour around the Mandir, Darshan (viewing of the sacred images), Arti Ceremony and a question and answer session.

Art workshop with laura mckendry 

Year 3 have been lucky enough to have an amazing Art workshop with the very talented artist, Laura McKendry. They explored and played with charcoal, linking to their Art unit this half term, where they drew big marks and used their whole body to draw. On large paper, the children created their own charcoal drawing, with themes ranging from stormy sea scenes to animals and flowers, whilst carefully considering expression in their artwork. Our school value of creativity was clear to see in the workshops and the children produced fantastic, original artwork. Everyone had so much fun!

Year 3 have thoroughly enjoyed designing and baking their own unique bread in Design and Technology. They carefully considered the design specification and used their kneading skills when shaping the bread into their shape of choice. The children also chose which added ingredients they wished to incorporate into their bread, to make it either sweet or savoury. The final outcomes were absolutely fantastic and it was wonderful to see such a variety of breads amongst the children, with a range of shapes and flavours. The children loved tasting their baked bread and they were so pleased with how delicious the bread was! 

                        

                                   

 

Community action

From next week (week commencing 7^th October), small groups of Year 3 children will begin visiting Brookwater House Care Home in Palmers Green, as part of our wider and personal development curriculum opportunities. The children will meet with the attendees and participate in a range of activities, including: sharing and listening to each other's memories and playing bingo and boardgames. Further updates to follow. 

Update:

The first group of children have now visited Brookwater House Care Home in Palmers Green, as part of our wider and personal development curriculum opportunities. They had a fantastic time at the care home, where they enjoyed accompanying a saxophonist in a musical performance for the attendees. The children behaved impeccably and showed all the Hazelwood values whilst visiting. We look forward to continuing to visit with groups of children as the term progresses.

      

A fantastic start to Year 3 

We are delighted to share the wonderful start that Year 3 has had as we embark on an exciting new academic year. The children have already immersed themselves in a wide range of topics, showcasing their curiosity and creativity.

In English, Year 3 engaged with the captivating story titled The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi. Through this story, the children explored the concept of identity and the significance of names. This exploration led them to reflect on their own class name, encouraging a rich discussion about its meaning and significance. The children used a variety of language devices to create an acrostic poem about the attributes of their own class (Rowan, Oak, Maple) and what it represents for them. Drawing inspiration from the poet, Michael Rosen, they demonstrated the school value of courage through their enthusiastic performances of their brilliant poems.

In Design and Technology, the children have had a lot of enjoyment learning about (and tasting!) different types of breads and have been developing their bread making skills, where they made some delicious bread rolls.    

 

We look forward to celebrating more achievements as the term progresses.
