Multicultural Week

What a wonderful week of learning we’ve had as we explored the fascinating country of China for our Multicultural Week! The children have been busy learning about China’s culture, climate, geography and wildlife. They were particularly intrigued by the Chinese Zodiac story, where they learnt about the twelve animals that took part in the Great Race on the Emperor’s birthday — a race that helped him find a clever way to measure time. The children then retold the story in their own words by creating fantastic comic strips, showing great imagination and storytelling flair. Children were also inspired by Jason Lai, an orchestral conductor, learning about why he is famous and how he encourages us to connect our mind, body, and heart through music and mindfulness – he even recorded a very special video just for us at Hazelwood! His message really resonated with the children and helped them reflect on how they can bring calm and focus when thinking about their own ‘conduct’. In cooking, the children demonstrated amazing resilience while making fortune cookies — they quickly discovered that timing is everything when shaping them! In PE, children also had great fun using fans to try out traditional Chinese dance, moving gracefully and rhythmically to create a final class performance. To finish the week, the children designed their own vases inspired by traditional Ming art. They demonstrated our school value of creativity, carefully adding paint to produce vibrant patterns and beautiful designs that truly celebrated Chinese artistry. It has been a fantastic Multicultural Week in Year 6, full of curiosity, creativity, and celebration of a rich and diverse culture.

Art - 2D art to 3D Structures

We have been studying Lubaina Humid and inspired by her work, we have been creating our own 2D art work to develop into 3D structures. Our theme is 'dogs and cats' and we have used key skills such as negative space and scaling up to make pur initial pieces larger.

We will of course, keep you posted on our final pieces too...

National poetry day

This year's theme was 'PLAY'! Have a read of some of the wonderful year 6 poems...

Science - Electricity!

In Science, we have been learning about Electricity. We started our unit of learning by building on what we had already learnt in year 4. We learned the recognised symbols for electrical components and used these when representing a simple circuit in a diagram. We then developed this by exploring and creating simple series circuits. After this, we started to explore what happens to the brightness of a lamp when we increase the number and voltage of cells used in the circuit. What we discovered is that as you increase the voltage in a circuit, the brightness of a bulb also increases. We drew a line graph to show these findings.

PGL - Caythorpe Court!

This week some very tired Year 6 children arrived back to school following their fantastic trip to PGL, Caythorpe Court. The children had a fabulous time, taking part in lots of different activities: raft-building, climbing, zip lining, archery, orienteering, trapeze, problem-solving and laser tag, just to name a few! If that wasn’t quite enough, they also enjoyed fun activities in the evening too: balloon splash, campfire and a wonderful disco where they showed off their dance moves! Despite the forecast, they managed to dodge the worst of the weather and even caught a glimpse of some lovely sunshine! Throughout the weekend, lots of sweets were eaten and not much sleep was had (and that's just the teachers!) but all the children certainly made some wonderful memories and demonstrated our school values of courage, ambition and teamwork throughout the trip – we couldn’t be prouder of all their achievements!

Activity Days - golf & Bowling!

Whilst some children were away, other Year 6 children also enjoyed two jam-packed days of fun more locally, as part of our Activity Days. On Friday, they enjoyed a day together at Jungle Falls Adventure Golf at Trent Park with lots of very high scores and some very competitive teams! They had a blast in the glorious sunshine - how very lucky they were! On Monday, the children then visited Hollywood Bowl for even more competitive fun – there are certainly some excellent bowlers amongst them with some even making it onto the leaderboard! Whilst they were there, they also enjoyed some delicious food too! Everyone had such a brilliant time it was so nice to see the children have fun together and even make some new friends across classes. All of the children certainly demonstrated lots of our school values, especially respect towards members of the public when travelling by bus. Well done Children!
