MyME WOrkshop

Today, children took part in a secondary transition workshop led by MyMe. This session allowed children to develop a better understanding of how transitioning from primary to secondary school may impact them emotionally. It has helped children identify any emotions that they may be currently feeling and consider ways that we can regulate and support our own emotions. They also discussed normalising general changes that occur in our everyday lives (e.g. moving house, friendship changes etc). Children also had the opportunity to ask questions throughout and certainly demonstrated lots of our school values

Magistrates talk

On Wednesday 4th June we were very lucky to receive a visit from Gwil and Amanda, both magistrates. They spoke to children about the role of a magistrate in the community and how they have a very important job to help keep us safe. The children also spoke about the criminal age of responsibility and spoke about some different scenarios that involved criminal offences. We were very impressed with their maturity and respect throughout.

6M Winchmore visit

6M had a great Science session at Winchmore! It was amazing to see the children in a real Science lab and taking part in lots of different activities!

SAts survival plan!

Mrs Walls set the children the challenge of creating their very own SATs survival plan. They had to think about their very own SATs Mantra, design their own cape of calm and think about who their SATs sidekicks might be. All of the children have taken these home to celebrate and share with you, and we hope that, together, we can make next week a real success and a positive experience for every single child. We are so proud of how the children have demonstrated resilience and ambition this week! Well done... you are so nearly there!

Pre-Sats fun!

Year 6's hard work, when writing letters to Mr Newham, certainly paid off! As a result, children have thoroughly enjoyed 3 afternoons of fabulous pre-SATs fun! The children played wonderfully at their much-loved Rec on Wednesday - it was so nice to see their smiling faces as they enjoyed the freedom! On Thursday, they enjoyed either watching a film, arts and crafts or playing outside in the sunshine. On Friday, they soaked up the celebrations of VE day and learnt about how VE day is a day to not only celebrate freedom in Europe but also an opportunity to remember those who have fought, lost their lives and have been affected by war. A fabulous week Year 6... bring on those papers!

Mathematic Reasoning (Paper 3)

The children have been working very hard all year and are now becoming really well-prepared for their SATs papers next week. We would ask that all parents help to support their child by ensuring that:

  • Your child is at school promptly by 8.45am at the very latest.
  • Ensure your child goes to bed at a reasonable time as a good night’s sleep is essential.
  • Children should have a well-balanced breakfast.
  • Please avoid making any dental or medical appointments during the week of the tests as it is very important for your child to attend every day.
  • If your child takes part in extra-curricular clubs, please encourage them to participate; this will ensure that their normal routine is not disturbed.
  • If your child is unwell, please phone the school as soon as possible so we can discuss whether it is possible for them to still take the test.

SATs Breakfast

On Monday - Thursday next week, we will be providing breakfast to our Year 6 children consisting of toast and fruit, which will be served in Maple Hall between 8:15am-8:30am. This is available to all Year 6 pupils who wish to come into school early on these days to help them settle into the morning and ensure they have a positive start to their day. All children who do not wish to have breakfast, must be in their classroom before the registers close at 8:45am each day. Please be aware that we will not be able to serve breakfast to children who arrive after 8:30am.

moment of calm workshop

As part of our continued commitment to prioritising children’s well-being, Year 6 children took part in an inspiring ‘Moment of Calm’ assembly hosted by Success Club and organised in partnership with Enfield Town Schools Partnership (ETSP). This session was aimed to support our year 6 children during this period leading up to their SATs. Children were taught a variety of powerful mindfulness techniques and each child received a 'Moment of Calm' booklet, filled with calming tips and tricks that they can refer back to as and when they feel they need to. The goal of the session was to empower the children with self-soothing techniques, encourage them to foster a growth mindset, and give them a helping hand with managing stress levels effectively. Children responded to the session with such maturity and we hope that they are able to apply some of the techniques learnt to help keep a positive mindset over the coming weeks too!

MyMe Workshop

On Thursday 27th February, children took part in a Year 6 Worry Buster interactive workshop led by My Young Mind Enfield. Throughout this session, children were supported to understand worries and concerns around SATs. Children sensibly shared their own worries and discussed with their peers ways that these may impact their thoughts, feelings and behaviours. As part of the session, children learnt techniques - such as grounding, rectangle breathing and palm pressing - to help regulate their emotions, particularly when they may feel heightened emotions in the lead up to and during SATs week.

TFL Workshop

On Wednesday 26th February 2025, Year 6 children took part in a TFL active Transport workshop that covered important information about personal safety, respect, responsibility and awareness both on and around public transport. During their workshop, the children discussed the following areas sensibly and maturely:

1.Journey planning – using Journey Planner
2. Active travel choices (such as cycling and walking)
3. Using different modes of transport in London
4. Ticketing (including the Zip Oyster photocards)
5. Getting help

The Pluck

To pull all of their Science learning together from across this half-term, children dissected a lamb’s heart and worked hard to identify the different parts of the heart that they have learnt all about. The children demonstrated ambition when using key scientific language and even some courage when feeling a little squeamish! An excellent experience for everyone.

Cardiologist visit

Children were very lucky to welcome a special guest this week, Dr Salam, who is a cardiologist and parent from within our fabulous Hazelwood Schools. He spoke to the children about how the heart works, how we can keep our heart healthy, what his job involves and how he uses his knowledge of the heart and circulatory system to help look after others. The children were fascinated to hear his expertise and we are very grateful that he gave up his time to come and visit us.

Year 6 maths competition

On Wednesday 12th February, 4 of our Year 6 children visited St Monica's to take part in an Inter-Schools Maths Competition. They demonstrated all of our school values and we were very proud of their effort! Well done team Hazelwood!

Identity art

This half-term, Year 6 children have been working hard to develop their portrait art skills. They worked on a variety of different techniques and finished with a final self-portrait which they then created a unique background for that reflected their unique identity. Children have loved being creative, using a variety of different mediums to bring their work to life: oil pastels, watercolour, paint and collage.

MyMe workshop - emotional regulation workshop

Year 6 children took part in an emotional regulation workshop run by My Young Mind Enfield. In the session, they learnt about the different parts of the brain and how the amygdala can trigger a fight or flight response when we are under pressure. Children were taught some useful strategies to help them to calm down such as belly breathing, finger locking and muscle compression.

making blood

In Science, children had a go at making their own model of blood! Children used plastic bottles as the blood vessels, which they first filled with food colouring and Cheerios to represent the red blood cells. Children then added squash to represent the liquid part of blood: plasma. After that, children finished by mixing in white marshmallows- acting as the white blood cells- and some pom poms to represent the platelets. Children used this as a stimulus to discuss the role that each of these parts of the blood have and why they are so important!

Year 6 Fashion Show!

Wow! What an incredible fashion show! We are so proud of all of our Year 6 children who took part in the very first Hazelwood Fashion Show. It was a lovely showcase of all of the hard work they have put in throughout their Design and Technology unit. Each unique design was a celebration of children’s individual cultural heritage and demonstrated impressive application of textiles skills: sewing buttons, creating pockets and seams. It was a real opportunity for children to celebrate our school values of courage, creativity and ambition and we know that although they were all a little nervous beforehand, the children absolutely loved it too! A huge thank you to all the parents and carers who joined us for this celebration and supported us either during our sewing morning or in helping children with mood boards and gathering important resources!

year 6 Forest school - autumn 2

Year 6 children thoroughly enjoyed their half term's forest school sessions and were very lucky with the weather! They enjoyed a whole host of wonderful activities and we have shared lots more photos via the newsletter!

Remembrance Day - Monday 11th November

Year 6 visited the Garden of Remembrance in Broomfield Park on Monday 11th November. The children performed a variety of songs that they had worked hard to learn and represented Hazelwood School so proudly at this very special event. We also laid a very special poppy wreath on behalf of Hazelwood Schools.
