It showcases not only what the children have been working on during the Autumn and Spring terms but just how much progress they have made in their music skills sing the start of the academic year. We had performances from the Infants and Juniors Choirs, the violin group, ukulele group and the mixed ensemble as well as some outstanding soloists from year 4, 5 and 6. Thank you to everyone who came and well done to all our fabulous musicians.

During Neurodiversity Celebration Week, the children learnt about how and why we are all different and unique, and how these differences make each and every one of us special in our own way. As a school, we explored the idea that everyone’s brain is different, and that no two people think, learn, or experience the world in exactly the same way.
Our special slogan for the week was: “Be confident, be you, be the star that you are” — a message that we believe should be embraced every day!

During assembly, we explored the meaning of neurodiversity and discussed why it is so important to celebrate it. The children also learned about different types of neurodiversity through a range of engaging videos, and discovered some well-known individuals who are neurodivergent.
Throughout the week, the children took part in a variety of fun and meaningful activities to mark this special week.

World Book Day was celebrated once again with a feast of literary characters throughout Hazelwood. Children dressed up as so many different characters and talked about their favourite books. This year, we joined thousands of children around the country in a live draw along and story telling workshop provided by Scholastic.
This included:
- The Flower Thief book
- Dog man and The boy with big decisions
- Solve a mystery at the Ivy Hotel with Emily Hourican!
- How Books are Made: How your favourite stories reach your shelves

Additionally, the children took part in a book hunt and had a teacher swap where a different teacher from the school came to read them their favourite story.

On Tuesday 3rd March, we hosted our second Community Iftar, celebrating the holy month of Ramadan as a school community. Once again, we were overwhelmed by the number of parents, carers, staff and children who attended as well as the amount of food brought and shared amongst our guests.
An Iftar is where Muslims come together to break their fast every day during the holy month of Ramadan.
It was lovely to see so many families, both Muslim and non-Muslim recite and listen to prayers and join together to eat traditional foods in a fabulous display of our community spirit.
Huge thank you must go to our wonderful HPSA organisers: Alia, Karima, Anna, Sara and Eva. It was such a special evening.

Last week, 71 children from the Hazelwood Choir took the trip to Wembley Arena to be part of the largest children’s choir in the world – Young Voices!
They had an amazing time singing, dancing and performing with 5000 other children to a huge crowd, including their parents and carers.
Songs ranged from a Wicked medley to No such thing as normal, from a Sea Shanty medley to the Young Voices classic: Power in me. Adding to that some fantastic dances by Urban Strides and a huge disco medley finale, everyone ended up on their feet!
Huge thank you to Miss Bispham for organising this wonderful experience for the children, Mrs Pearson and Miss Harris who supported with this and the parent volunteers who accompanied and seemed to really enjoy themselves too!
The children will undoubtedly remember this for a very long time!

Our wonderful HPSA Daisies performed their amazing pantomime not once, not twice, not three times, but four times on Wednesday to a packed out hall of children and then adults in the evening - OH YES THEY DID! ! Lots of singing, dancing, acting, dames, wicked stepmother, mice, fairies and even some K-pop demon hunters appeared throughout the show to entertain the watching audience. Huge thank you must go to all of the amazing cast and crew for their time, dedication, energy and amazing acting skills! We can't wait for next year already!!

That just increased the enjoyment and engagement level of our children who were able to learn so much information about different cultures and traditions.

To celebrate how we are one big family at Hazelwood made up of many different cultures, nationalities and identities, every child contributed to this exciting week of learning, by asking lots of questions, finding out lots of information and really showing our value of appreciation and understanding. Our overarching message this week is that "All are Welcome" at Hazelwood and we are proud to say that "We’re part of a community. Our strength is our diversity". What a special way to finish the first half term of this academic year.

This week some very tired Year 6 children arrived back to school following their fantastic trip to PGL, Caythorpe Court. The children had a fabulous time, taking part in lots of different activities: raft-building, climbing, zip lining, archery, orienteering, trapeze, problem-solving and laser tag, just to name a few! If that wasn’t quite enough, they also enjoyed fun activities in the evening too: balloon splash, campfire and a wonderful disco where they showed off their dance moves! Despite the forecast, they managed to dodge the worst of the weather and even caught a glimpse of some lovely sunshine! Throughout the weekend, lots of sweets were eaten and not much sleep was had (and that's just the teachers!) but all the children certainly made some wonderful memories and demonstrated our school values of courage, ambition and teamwork throughout the trip – we couldn’t be prouder of all their achievements!

On Friday, they enjoyed a day together at Jungle Falls Adventure Golf at Trent Park with lots of very high scores and some very competitive teams! They had a blast in the glorious sunshine - how very lucky they were! On Monday, the children then visited Hollywood Bowl for even more competitive fun – there are certainly some excellent bowlers amongst them with some even making it onto the leaderboard! Whilst they were there, they also enjoyed some delicious food too! Everyone had such a brilliant time it was so nice to see the children have fun together and even make some new friends across classes. All of the children certainly demonstrated lots of our school values, especially respect towards members of the public when travelling by bus. Well done Children!

Opening with the Hazelwood Dance Festival entry and including a performance form the school choir, the talent show was the culmination of class rounds and a semi-final, with winners performing for the ultimate trophy! We had gymnasts, dancers, pianists, singers, comedians, magicians, a rock band and a diabolo spinner! The level of talent and the variety of the performances was incredibly and made the job of our guest judges very hard. This year, we welcomed: Graham Sievers (Chairman of Conway Tennis Club); Kathryn Duffy (Young Centre Stage Principal); Christina Kyprou (Founder of CK Performing Arts) and Emma Cooper (a Hazelwood Governor) to judge the performances. After much deliberation, they announced the winners from each Phase Group and we were delighted to have Tony Ourris from Anthony Webb present the medals and trophies.
What an amazing array of talented young people we have at Hazelwood!

Then the party started! Mrs Pearson was simply amazing, leading all the classes in the Hazelwood street party. From Cha Cha Slide to Agadoo, the children joined in every dance and even created their own conga lines around the playground. The party also proved that jelly and ice-cream is as popular today as it was 80 years ago, as over 700 portions were served to the children during the afternoon. Children sang along to the music and decorated the table cloths as they enjoyed their yummy pudding.

As always, the children of Hazelwood show how mature, thoughtful, kind and full of a zest for life that makes days like these even more special.

The children learnt all about the festival and why it is important to Hindus. During the day, the whole school learnt about the importance of the story of Holika and Prahlad and how Holi is celebrated around the world as well as a creative activity using the special and important colours of the gulal (powder) and their meaning for Hindus.
As a special treat, Mrs Naik, Mrs Khatry, Mrs Patel and Mrs Joshi also cooked and prepared some traditional Holi food and drink for the children to try!
Our wonderful day culminating in a special celebration of Rangwali Holi by throwing the gulal to remember the story of Krishna and Radha and the different meanings behind the vibrant colours. It was certainly a celebration that the children will remember for a very long time!

What started as an idea at a HPSA coffee morning, turned into a wonderful community event with over 170 adults and children attending. An Iftar is where Muslims come together to break their fast every day during the holy month of Ramadan.
It was lovely to see so many families, both Muslim and non-Muslim recite and listen to prayers and join together to eat traditional foods in a fabulous display of our community spirit.
Huge thank you must go to all the local businesses who supported us with food and drink as well as everyone who brought food to share. And the biggest thanks to our wonderful HPSA organisers: Alia, Anna, Sara and Eva. It was such a special evening.

They had an amazing time singing, dancing and performing with 5000 other children to a huge crowd, including their parents and carers.
Songs ranged from a Bob Marley medley to Little Blue, from Oceania to a Hairspray musical extravaganza. Combine that with MC Grammar and a 90s disco rave and there is a flavour of the magnificence of Young Voices 2025. Huge thank you to Miss Bispham for organising this wonderful experience for the children, Mrs Pearson who supported with this and the parent volunteers who accompanied and seemed to really enjoy themselves too!
The children will undoubtedly remember this for a very long time!

Huge thank you to Anna, Sara, Eva and the entire HPSA team of incredible volunteers.

A Message from John Gilbert:
A World 1st at Hazelwood - a pre-school Newspaper Group.

At 8.20am on any Thursday morning at Hazelwood School there are 50-60 Newspaper Readers. From Yr 1 to Yr 6 there is debate and discussion and illustration and thought and questions and questioning on geography, history, politics, the environment, global heating, science, engineering, business, sport, fashion and more.
The catalyst for every ‘student’, our readers like to be called students and not children, is the 90p ‘I’ Newspaper. All attending take their intellectual momentum forward into their classrooms and onwards to their families for afternoon and evening discussions. Most importantly, there isn’t a screen in sight. We celebrate their reading skills, a growing vocabulary, the human voice, positive and expressive body language and the ability to interact and discuss about anything and everything with anyone and everyone. Our Headteacher Mr Newham and John Gilbert, the world’s oldest paper boy, believe that every primary and secondary school in the world would benefit greatly by creating their own Hazelwood style Newspaper Group 🍎

It was so heartwarming to see kindness, responsibility, and generosity in action, especially during the holiday season. So much was collected by every class and many families in Enfield will benefit from our generosity at what can be a difficult time of year for so many.
The effort made in donating food is a true testament to the dedication that our families show to supporting our community. It was so inspiring to see the contributions, knowing that so many families will have a brighter Christmas because of our actions. Well done Hazelwood!

These talented spellers worked hard to prepare for the semi-finals, where they showed off their impressive spelling skills by tackling words from their year group’s statutory spelling lists, and even rose to the occasion of spelling some Challenge Words!

With courage and ambition, they faced each round with determination, showing great teamwork and resilience. Although they didn’t make it to the finals this time, each participant was absolutely brilliant and should be immensely proud of their achievements.

They really enjoyed sharing rooms with their friends and taking part in exciting activities such as crate stacking, bouldering, archery, low-ropes and wobbly pole.

The children spent time playing outdoor games and exploring the woods, identifying trees and looking for hidden secrets. One of the highlights for many was the amazing sight of two stags just outside their windows when they woke up Friday morning – it was worth the early hour!

Some children were a little nervous about taking part, but everyone challenged themselves to overcome their fears, showing our values of resilience and courage as well as fantastic teamwork and responsibility. We were really lucky with the weather and the children had a fantastic time, enjoying taking part in activities they may not have tried before.

On Monday 30th September, Hazelwood had a very special guest - Dr Fuzz, the author of ‘Poppy the Pea’! Dr Fuzz started the day with an inspiring assembly, where he shared how a pea flying off his plate during dinner inspired his book, ‘Poppy the Pea’. He also spoke about the ups and downs of his journey to becoming a writer, encouraging the children to show resilience and courage in pursuing their dreams.
Throughout the day, Dr. Fuzz held exciting workshops with different year groups:
Year 2 took part in a ‘Fear & Courage’ workshop, where they watched clips from the ‘Poppy the Pea’ audiobook. Dr Fuzz explained how Poppy’s journey involved conquering her fears and encouraged the children to reflect on their own moments of bravery.
Year 3 participated in a ‘Dreams & Plans’ session, exploring how to turn big dreams into achievable goals. The children were challenged to think about the steps they would need to take to realise their ambitions, such as becoming an athlete or scientist. They discussed key elements like staying focused, practising regularly and researching their passions.
Year 6 attended a thought-provoking workshop on ‘Setbacks & Comebacks’, where they explored stories of famous figures like J.K. Rowling and Michael Jordan, who faced obstacles but persevered. The children were invited to share their own experiences of setbacks and reflect on how they could turn challenges into opportunities, some linking the discussion to their recent experiences at the PGL trip.

The children performed incredibly well, having learnt their lines, the songs and the dance moves over the past few weeks. Whilst they might have been singing about being “revolting children”, they most definitely were not. Everyone played their part, from the usual characters of the Wormwood family, Miss Honey, Bruce, Amanda Thripp and the very scary Miss Trunchbull, to the lesser known characters of our story, including the Backstreet Boys! Every single member of the cast put in a performance to remember! Not forgetting the technicians, who worked tirelessly to ensure that the props, music, lighting and staging was always on point!
Huge thank you to all of the adults who helped to make the show so special: Mr Jack, Miss Rosalind, Mr Constantinides, Mrs Kelly, Mrs Watson, Mrs Conner, Miss Gardiner, Ms Reid, Mrs Walls, Mrs Hammond, Miss Bispham, Mrs Chappell... and, of course, Miss McBride for directing the show! And a special thank you to Laura, Sara and Eva who helped with the artwork, choreography, singing and staging - we are very grateful!

It has been a joy to watch the children blossom and gain confidence in themselves, forming friendships with their peers and strong bonds with the familiar adults in the Nursery. They are now ready to embark on the next step of their educational journey as they transition to Reception. Congratulations to all the children on your graduation from Nursery. Whether the children are coming to Hazelwood for Reception or going on to different schools, we are so proud of each and every one of them.

The children loved seeing the variety of science topics displayed around the hall and then managed to watch some fantastic science experiments too. We had hundreds of families watching, with popcorn, cakes, candyfloss and ice creams in hand thanks to the wonderful volunteers from HPSA. Our guest judges were in place: Mrs Brown - leaving us after over 20 years at Hazelwood; Elizabeth Bower - CBBC presenter; and Graeme Sievers - chairman of Conway Tennis Club. Our 9 finalists were fabulous and showed much courage and confidence as they took to the stage with their performances. We had singing, dancing, science experiments, comedy acts and piano playing - a huge variety reflecting just how special our children are.

Huge thanks to Miss Bispham for organising the music, Steve for ensuring that the sound was all perfect on the day, and Martin from Anthony Webb for presenting the medals and trophies.

The day included special assemblies, 'drop everything and read' and a special visit from the author of ‘The Spectaculars’ by Jodie Garnish for our KS2 children! We had a very successful book fair to end the day, and we made a whopping £1200, giving us loads of money to spend on new books to restock our library. Our children were ecstatic to see the installation of our new ActivAll boards on their return from half term. The School Council spent time with Mr Bowstead, Mrs Gannon, Mrs Hammond and Mr Jack exploring the capabilities and functionality of the boards over the first few days and thought it would be useful to create an introductory video to share with classes. They then spent the next few days demonstrating to others how to use the boards.
As the boards have proved to be very popular, we have created a rota so that children know which day their year group can play on them. From what we have seen this week, the children are thrilled to have the opportunity to play the games and challenge themselves to beat their scores.
Our School Councillors decided that you might like to hear first-hand what our children really think of the boards so they conducted an interview with some of the children who have already had a play on them.

February 6th 2024 was Safer Internet Day which is the UK’s biggest celebration of online safety. At Hazelwood Schools we participated in these celebrations and learning based on the theme of ‘Inspiring change’ by looking at different areas of internet safety. To kickstart the day, Years 1 & 2, 3 & 4 and 5 & 6 participated in an assembly which introduced the purpose and themes of the day. The children were very enthusiastic when sharing what they do online. There were also more than a few sniggers/confused looks when looking at how much technology has changed and teachers talking about using record players to listen to music and using telephones that you had to turn the dial for each number to make a telephone call.

In the classroom, the children participated in a range of activities to support their understanding of how to remain safe online. Nursery and Reception classes looked at things that might change while online. They focused on if anything changes while they are online and it makes them sad, worried or scared, what they can do and who they can talk to to keep themselves safe. Years 1 and 2 read stories about Mo and Jaz who like to play games and watch videos online. In each story, something changed such as a funny video turning into a scary video or a person promising to give more ‘tokens’ from a game if Mo and Jaz shared what they already had. Each story lead to great discussion about how things can change online and what children can do to keep themselves safe. The honesty, understanding and maturity seen from our Year 1s and 2s regarding keeping safe online was astounding. Years 3 and 4 looked at how much technology has changed over the years, it was quite funny to see the look of horror on some children’s faces to realised there was a life without the internet or computer technology as it is today. The children spent time discussing and designing what the technology of the future might be and how it could be made safe for the people who use it. Our value of creativity was shining brightly across Years 3 and 4 this afternoon with amazing inventions being designed. Finally, Years 5 and 6 looked at the power of influencers and how they can impact our daily lives. Once again, the understanding, honesty and maturity of our students when talking about online safety leaves me speechless. The children spent time discussing how they felt influencers had influenced them and then they designed their own influencers who would use their powers for good.

On Monday, some very weary Year 6 children and staff arrived back to school following their fantastic trip to PGL Caythorpe Court. The children had a wonderful time, taking part in a whole host of different activities: climbing, abseiling, Giant Swing, canoeing, orienteering and archery, just to name a few! Lots of sweets were eaten and not much sleep was had but all of the children demonstrated our school values of courage, ambition and teamwork throughout the trip - we couldn’t have been prouder of all their achievements!
Huge thanks to Miss McBride, Ms Reid, Mrs Conner, Mr Jack and Miss Rosalind for leading the trip and giving the children these life-long memories!
