Welcome to the Wonderful Year 5 Webpage
Autumn 1 – 2017
Next half term’s learning journey is Blow Your Mind!

Week Ending:
Friday 15.9.17

In English:

This week, we have continued to develop descriptive language in order to produce a Harry Potter poem, the children then used this language to apply to a character description as well as using expanded noun phrases.

Next week,
we will be applying descriptive language including expanded noun phrases to create a setting description in the theme of Harry Potter. In particular we will focus on the use of fronted adverbials and how to apply a variety.

In Maths:
This week, we have been:

  • Adding whole numbers with more than 4 digits, including using columnar addition
  • Adding numbers mentally with increasingly large numbers
  • Using rounding to check answers to calculations
  • Solving addition multi-step problems in contexts, deciding which operations and methods to use and why

Next week, we will:

  • Add and subtract whole including to 2 decimals places numbers with more than 4 digits using formal methods of columnar addition and subtraction
  • Mentally add numbers with increasingly large numbers
  • Use rounding to check answers to calculate and determine accuracy of answers

Also this week: We reflected on our exciting Big Bang day, thinking about the products used in each experiment and how putting them together created a reaction and deciding whether or not these reactions were reversible or irreversible.
