Our learning journey this half term is: Our Local Area

Within this learning journey, we will be focusing on map reading skills in Geography where the children will draw comparisons between old and new maps, discovering how Palmers Green has changed over time. In Art, we will research the artist ‘J.M.W. Turner’ and use his work as inspiration for our own water colour paintings.

In English:
This week:

This week we have literally dove into our learning as we developed our role play skills to step into a setting from the familiar story, ‘The Gruffalo’. The children were fantastic at building a ‘tableau’ by becoming the setting; they came up with some fantastic expanded noun phrases to describe what they were in the forest. We were so impressed by their beautifully descriptive language in their setting descriptions and were happy to see some children using similes and a thesaurus to enrich their vocabulary.

Next week: Continuing with our focus text, ‘The Gruffalo’, we will use story mapping and actions to memorise and perform the story as the week progresses. We will also explore the various characters and will eventually apply our knowledge of similes and adjectives to describing our chosen character.

In Maths:

This week:

We have continued to explore the ‘place value’ of numbers by identifying values of digits in a two digit number. To support the children with this, we began with visual and practical activities where the children could make numbers, using pictures and manipulatives to represent the tens and ones. Following on from this, they began using the expanded method, where the number was represented as an addition sentence; e.g. 45 = 40 + 5. Some children compared the value of numbers, based on their knowledge of place value and had lots of opportunities to deepen their learning with various problems.

Next Week: We will begin the week by recapping and refreshing the children’s understanding of number facts to 10 and 20; some children will use this knowledge to calculate facts to 100, e.g. 2 + 8 = 10, so 20 + 80 = 100. Number bonds are something you could definitely practise at home, in case they haven’t retained them from Year 1. Later in the week, we will move on to using our understanding of place value to adding a two digit number and a single digit number, to then adding a two digit number and multiples of ten.

Also this week:

The children’s home learning was completed to an excellent standard and they shared this in our first Art lesson of the term. Our ‘Big Bang’ definitely captured the children’s intrigue as they worked collaboratively to investigate what the objects and pictures, found in a mysterious time capsule, were. When asked what they would put into a time capsule to best show what our school and local area is like now, they came up with some creative and brilliant ideas.

*********************************   REMINDERS & NOTICES  *********************************

The days that your child will need to have their full PE kit in school are as follows;
2R: Thursday and Friday
2O: Tuesday and Thursday
2M: Tuesday and Thursday

Trips: Broomfield Park visit: Wednesday 11th October We are so excited to announce the date of our first trip of the year. Our trip to Broomfield park ties in nicely with our topic, ‘Our Local Area’ and the children will learn a brief history of the park and its house. A letter will be sent out with all of the details for this.

Home learning: Just a reminder that home learning needs to be back in school on Tuesdays as we may be using it in our learning that day. Thank you.

If you will be available to support us at any point this year, please see the office to complete a DBS check as it is not possible for you to accompany us without one. You will also need to do an induction with Mrs Gannon. Thank you again for your amazing support.

Autumn 1: Our Local Area

BIG BANG: A Mysterious Time capsule is found on Hazelwood Grounds!

The children and staff were puzzled when some peculiar items and photos were found around school. We worked together to raise questions that we had about the time capsule’s contents and noted any observations. The children were fantastic at deducing information from their observations; they explained what they showed us about our local area ‘back then’. We even thought about what we could put in our  own time capsule that would best represent Hazelwood and Palmers Green ‘now’.
